project: the arbouR
DESCRIPTION
Club Heathcote is a small community club near the Royal National Park on Sydney’s southern fringe. DACCA Architecture redesigned the venue to make better use of the space and the bushland setting. DACCA commissioned Di Emme to produce a hand-painted mural to run behind the main bar, and a wallpaper mural to serve as both a feature wall and a backdrop to the staircase.
The materials, textures and motifs in the redesign are inspired by the local bush with its dry sclerophyll forests and archetypal Sydney sandstone. Incidentally, the club has been rebranded as ‘The Arbour’ to reflect the leafy setting.
The bar mural features local eucalypt species: scribbly gums, Sydney peppermints and red bloodwoods. Di Emme created a digital schematic of the composition and layout and provided 1:1 painted samples to gain client approval in advance of the artisan going on site to hand-paint the design.
For the wallpaper mural, Di Emme created the original digital artwork and produced test prints to confirm the exact texture and colouring. The gum leaves are abstracted through sheer size with the charcoal texture evocative of the traditional owners’ creative tools.
DACCA provided concepts for the murals for artistic interpretation by Di Emme.
